Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is frequently referred to us OCD. OCD is a common mental health issue. Basically, OCD is a form of Anxiety Disorder where a person suffers from the same thoughts, ideas, or feelings repeatedly.
Some of the common types of OCD is that people repeatedly wash their hands. Individuals become so scared of infections that they wash their hands’ hundreds of times a day. To the extent that the hands become raw and the skin starts to peel off.
Another form of OCD is where someone will check if they have locked the door to their house frequently before leaving the house. And even after reassuring themselves that the door is locked, the will worry that they have left the door unlocked. A similar type of OCD is to recheck that the cooking stove or clothes iron is switched off. All these fears are relational, but when they become obsessive and start to interfere with the day to living they become a mental health disorder and require treatment.
Sexual OCD
Another type of OCD is of Unwanted Sexual Thoughts. While it is normal and healthy to have sexual thoughts when these thoughts become excessive and overtake the mind and hinder normal day to day living they require treatment. Some of the symptoms of Unwanted Sexual Thoughts OCD are
- Perverse and/or Forbidden sexual thoughts or images
- Perverse and/or Forbidden sexual impulses about others
- Obsessions about homosexuality, either excessively thinking about it, or hating homosexuals
- Sexual obsessions that involve children or incest
- Obsessions about aggressive sexual behavior towards others
When Sexual OCD or any other type of OCD occurs it is best to seek the help of an experienced Psychologist. OCD will not cure or go away by itself, instead, with time the mental illness will increase and even hamper day to day life more.
